Running in Winter: What on earth should I wear?

1. Layer by layer
When running in winter, the layering principle applies:

  • Functional base layers keep you dry by transporting sweat away from the skin.
  • A mid-layer made of breathable shirts or light fleece stores warmth.
  • An outer layer protects against wind and moisture – keeping you warm all around.

2. Pay attention to your sensitivity to cold
Women often feel cold more quickly, especially in the hands, feet, and head. Thermal leggings, insulated gloves, and headbands or a breathable hat keep your head nice and warm while still allowing air circulation – so your body can regulate its temperature optimally.

3. Stay visible
Reflectors, LED bands, reflective vests, and a chest or headlamp ensure that you’re safe even in the dark – whether on the road or on the trail.

4. Choose shoes & socks wisely
Shoes with good tread or trail shoes provide grip on slippery paths; spikes help on ice and slick surfaces. Merino wool socks keep your feet warm and dry.
