Horst Milde named honorary Race Director of the real,- BERLIN MARATHON

Horst Milde was named honorary Race Director of the real,- BERLIN MARATHON on Friday evening during the Get-Together reception of the 31st real,- BERLIN MARATHON at the Scandinavian Embassies at Lützowplatz. The directing manager of SCC RUNNING, Rüdiger Otto, thanked Horst Milde for his decades of hard work and dedication. The Berlin State Secretary for Sport, Thomas Härtel, also expressed his thanks to Horst Milde in commemoration of his many years of activity. Härtel praised the good and always dependable cooperation with SCC RUNNING and emphasised the importance of the real,- BERLIN MARATHON for the German capital. Even the Football World Championships 2006, explained Hertel, advertised for the city with the Marathon. He gave his best wishes to Horst Milde’s successor, his son Mark. In his speech, Horst Milde passed the thanks on to the ”large family of volunteers, without whom the marathon would not be what it is.“ It was just about 40 years ago in the Grunewald Forest that the then 26-year-old Horst Milde started the first Berlin People’s Run. The cross-country race, with over 700 participants that started on November 8, 1964 on the Teufelsberg Mountain was then considered to be a sensation. Horst Milde became famous as ’The man who taught Berlin how to run’. His success story is unique in Germany, and hardly reachable anywhere else in the world, either. From the first cross country race on the Teufelsberg Mountain in 1964 to the start of 2004, Horst Milde and his organisation team have gotten exactly 1,268,649 people running in 348 events. Leading all of the events is of course the real,- BERLIN MARATHON, which Horst Milde has become one of the most spectacular and world class international street races. Horst Milde began his career in track and field for the sport club TSV Tempelhof-Mariendorf, in the Berlin district where he grew up and where he still lives. He later changed over to SCC Berlin where he was a middle distance runner. There he was a two-time German Champion in the 3 x 1000m relay (1964 and 1965) with a team that included Bodo Tümmler, who was European Champion in the 1500m in 1966. In the 800m, Horst Milde ran a personal best time of 1:49.8 min., he ran the 1000m in 2:25:00 min., the 1500m in 3:51.8 min., and the 400m in 49.1 sec. Horst Milde ran the 10,000m in 33:33 min.
